What is Non-performing Letter Of Credit?
A guarantee of payment is issued by a bank for a client that is called ‘payment of last resort’ if the client fails to fulfill a contractual agreement with a third party. The non-performing letter of credit, also known as standby letters of credit is developed as a proof of good faith in business payments. These documents are also regarded as proof of a buyer’s credit quality and repay capabilities.
The bank responsible in issuing the standby letter of credit aka non-performing letter of credit will perform a concise underwriting duty. This will assure the credit quality of the party requiring the letter of credit. Thereafter, the bank will send the notification to the bank of the relevant party (a seller or creditor) seeking the letter of credit.

Also known as a non-reforming letter of credit the stand by letter of credit generally will be valid for one year. This will allow enough time so that the payment is made through standard contractual guidelines. The standby letters of credit are also often used in making international transactions. The seller will ask for a non-performing letter of credit that can be cashed on demand if a buyer fails to pay by the date mentioned in the contract.

The cost to get a standby letter of credit is generally 4-15% of the face amount per year. However, the letter will be cancelled when the terms of the contract will be met by the borrower of the purchaser. A non-performing letter of credit is basically a written document given by an institution to the person with whom you are doing business in order to pay a particular amount of money in the condition that you or any third party won’t meet specific financial or performance obligations.
